What Life Coaching Is and What It Can Do For You

... An Emotional Connection. What’s getting between you and your best life?  The coaching process of deep listening and powerful questioning helps unearth your deep-seated truth, purpose and passions. By working through blocks - negative thinking, limiting beliefs, bad habits, and the like - together we clear the path connecting your inner truths to outer goals and actions. This can inspire and ignite extraordinary and sustainable changes. Your coach sees your greatness even where you do not, and supports you in making choices, taking action, finding the right balance - assisting you as you move out of the problems of the past, create changes in the present, envision and implement the future you desire.

... A Support System.  Only you – not your parents, not your boss, not your spouse or partner, not your friends, not even your coach – know what’s best for you. Coaches honor their clients’ own ability to seek solutions to any problem or situation. As your coach, I will gently nudge you into action by encouraging you to think and do things differently. We will exchange information, new ideas, fresh insights and different perspectives.  You’ll be challenged to venture outside your comfort zone and break through the barriers holding you back. I will stand by you as you confront destructive habits, reframe negative thoughts, face fears, deal with external obstacles and difficult people. I will champion efforts and celebrate successes, offer support during tough times. Every step of the way, I will accompany you as you design and create a life you love.

... A Co-designed Alliance. Unlike any book, seminar or class, the coaching relationship establishes an individualized, personal dynamic dedicated solely to the wants and needs of you, the client. The partnership which develops between you and your coach - based on confidentiality, permission, respect, accountability, trust and truth, free of judgment, assumptions, advice and opinions - creates a safe and sacred space for you to explore, dream, take chances, make changes, and grow.

… Change From the Inside Out. Imagine taking back control of your life.  Feeling content and at ease with your relationships, your job, your self.  Living at the cause, rather than at the effect, of your circumstances. Operating from a position of I choose to, I’m looking forward to, I want to, I’m eager to and I can’t wait to instead of I won’t, I can’t, I don’t want to, I have to, I need to, or I should.  In a state of conscious choice and self-mastery.  Feeling fully engaged, enthusiastic, impassioned and in control as you navigate through life, no matter how stormy the seas.  As your coach, I will help you examine how your thoughts and beliefs may be impacting emotions, actions and reactions and impeding your progress.  Together we will explore ways to move out of negative, paralyzing, “what’s wrong” thinking – fear, shame, blame, doubt, anger, etc. - and into a world of solutions, a place of passion, power, potential and purpose, where anything is possible.

…A Holistic Approach. The coaching paradigm operates on the ripple effect, the belief that all aspects of one’s life are inextricably interrelated, and events either positive or negative in one area can have a profound impact on every other. While a coach and client may focus on one or two particular matters at hand – job dissatisfaction; difficulties with a romantic partner, friend, family member, boss or co-worker; an overscheduled agenda; money issues; health and fitness concerns; problems with procrastination; spiritual questions, you name it – a simple action or shift in thinking can usually trigger far-reaching, extraordinary results elsewhere, or everywhere.

… Non-Judgmental. In coaching, there is no "coulda, shoulda, woulda.”  A mistake is nothing more than an action resulting in an outcome other than the one we expected; an accident merely a happening we didn’t plan. It's not necessarily about making the “right” decisions, but making your decisions right.  There are no errors or failures, just challenges we face and choices we make creating different ways to experience life and new opportunities to learn. What was once regarded a problem becomes a chance to grow; what was first considered an adversity becomes an opportunity. In coaching, it's all good.

What Life Coaching Isn't

…Therapy. Coaches do not deal in psychology, in "damage" or "dysfunction." Though we acknowledge and accept that events from the past may indeed be impacting the present, coaches do not try to analyze or justify or find explanations for behaviors and patterns. Solution- rather than problem-focused, the coaching relationship works on taking the client from where they are - right here, right now - to where they want to be.

…Consulting. Consultants consider themselves experts in specific fields; they offer clients their experience in, knowledge of, advice on and solutions to specific problems. While coaches may share information, they accept that the only expert on the needs and desires of the client is the client. The answer to every question, the solution to any problem, are within the client. The coach and the coaching process help the client access those answers.

…Sports Coaching. Empowerment or Life Coaching isn't about competition or winning. It focuses on bringing out one's best, not besting someone else.

…A Close Friendship. Friends usually want what's best for their buddy, but they lack emotional distance and feel free to offer opinions and advice. (And may have their own conflicting agenda.)  Coaching is a friendly yet professional, judgment-free, objective relationship based purely upon the client's agenda, whatever that may be.

…Mentoring. Coaches don't take clients "under their wing," offer their own life experience as a guide, show them "the ropes" or function as a role model. The coach functions more as a sounding board, a support system, accompanying the client throughout the coaching process of self-discovery, action, accountability, growth and change.
